Vibrant wedding ceremonies in Turkmen Sahra

TEHRAN — Iranian Turkmen are an ethnic community living in Turkmen Sahra region which includes northern and northeastern parts of the country, mainly Golestan, North Khorasan, and Khorasan Razavi provinces. Turkmen wedding ceremonies are flamboyant, eye-catching and filled with authentic traditional customs preserved and passed down from generation to generation. Turkmen consider marriage as an important social and economic dimension to their lives. They believe marriage and child bearing would make their families and tribes more powerful. A day after the wedding ceremony the guests perform a game that whoever gets to take off the white cloth wrapped around the bride’s head sooner would be the winner. The winner celebrates her victory. A reception party is given one day before the wedding ceremony when the groom’s family bring gifts for the bride. The groom does not attend this ceremony. They prepare the bride for the ceremony by wrapping a white cloth around her head wishing her a happy life. Before getting to the groom’s house they get off the car and take a short walk to the house being accompanied by their folks. The groom’s mother wash the bride’s and groom’s hands in a solution of flour mixed with oil which is symbol of blessed and blissful life. Immediate family members of the bride and the groom go on rooftops and throw a ball-like object. Whoever succeeds in catching the object would receive some certain amount of money from them which is a symbol of blessing the bride has brought with her presence.
